GOOD WILL TO ALL

This morning, everywhere I turn

there’s holiday music playing.

All happy songs of Peace and Love

and Good Will to All

and Joy to the World.

Really? To the WHOLE world?

You mean it?

Because if you really believe in Good Will to All,

you’re gonna have to change the way

you treat people who are different from you.

And if not, then say what you mean:

good will to

some.

OTHER CALENDARS, OTHER CELEBRATIONS

I learned from my gramma to love celebrations,

to respect holiday traditions wherever I go.

Diwali, Eid, Ramadan, Rosh Hashanah, Hannukah,

Kwaanza, Christmas, Solstice, Día de los Reyes—

all like different jewels in a treasure chest.

I thought I knew all the holidays of the year,

but I find there are other calendars, not just ours.

The Egyptians had a calendar, and the Chinese,

the Mayans and the Persians and the Aztecs too.

And if they all had a calendar, I can have

a calendar too—with all the days important to me.

If their heroes’ birthdays are holidays,

then I can add holidays for my heroes too—

and let people know all about them.

So this year, on December 21,

I’m celebrating the birthday of

Emma Tenayuca because I think it’s right

to celebrate those

who fight for justice

and who are brave and kind,

who fight to defend the people who have money

and those who don’t.

Those who speak English

and those who don’t.

Those who have papers

and those who don’t.

I think she would have fought to help my dad too,

and even to help me have my history

included in school.
